Bubble & Squeak Celebrate the UEFA Women’s European Championship with Indie Pop Anthem, ‘Let’s Do It Again’

Originally brought together by a shared love of Christmas and tongue-in-cheek indie pop, Poppy Hankin (Girl Ray) and Jof Owen (The Boy Least Likely To) AKA Bubble & Squeak, release ‘Let’s Do It Again’ on Sweet Friend Records in celebration of the UEFA Women’s European Championship starting July 2.

Seven years on from their last single ‘The Christmas Stick’, the London duo return to cheer on the Lionesses with a football anthem that celebrates recent glories while cheekily rolling its eyes at disparaging attitudes towards the women’s game.

Let’s Do It Again’ is a quirky slacker pop terrace anthem that tells the tale of a camping trip to Switzerland to support the England women’s team in the 2025 Women’s Euro’s with a rousing, air-punching chorus and a charming clap-a-long indie pop feel.

“We came up with the idea while we were watching the Women’s Champions League Final in a pub and felt a bit sad they didn’t have a song specifically for it,” explains Poppy Hankin. “We’d already booked our tickets to see the Lionesses in Switzerland and wanted to dedicate a song to them, so we started writing ‘Let’s Do It Again’ there and then. We figured if nothing else, it would give us something to sing while we drove around Switzerland.

“The song also takes an irreverent side swipe at some of the sexist attitudes that still surround women’s football with lines like, “All of us have felt the rage when local pubs won’t show the women’s games / it’s such a shame that Lauren James and Aggie Beaver-Jones aren’t household names”.

“Anyone who has ever supported women’s football will know the feeling of going to the pub to watch the Lionesses and being told they’re not showing it because there’s a men’s game on,” says Jof Owen. “Even if you’re lucky to find a pub playing the game, chances are the sound is off. We’ve had to watch crucial England qualifiers on our phones outside the pub before.”

‘Let’s Do It Again’ also celebrates the Lionesses victory in the 2022 Women’s Euro’s, including the historic final at Wembley against Germany that the pair both attended.

“My Bobby Moore is Leah Williamson,” the pair sing in one of the choruses as they pay tribute to the heroic performance of the Lionesses and the England captain who lifted the trophy at the last Women’s Euros, hoping that the team can achieve the same heights this time around.

Bubble & Squeak might not be prolific but the best things in life are often worth waiting for. With over half a million streams on Spotify and having been included in the Rough Trade Shops Jangle Bells Christmas Compilation, ‘The Christmas Stick’ has become an unlikely addition to festive playlists everywhere.

Poppy Hankin is the singer in North London pop group Girl Ray, who released their latest album, Prestige, in 2023 via Moshi Moshi to widespread critical acclaim. Jof Owen is the singer in seminal indiepop group The Boy Least Likely To, who celebrated the 20th Anniversary of their debut album The Best Party Ever with a UK tour playing the album in its entirety for the first time.
