The embryo of “Waiting for a Train” was written by Mats – perhaps not entirely
unexpectedly – one day while he was standing on a train platform. But this was long before he became an indie artist and started releasing music on Spotify. Still, the song kept bothering him, popping up in his head from time to time as if it were saying: “Hey, you haven’t forgotten about me, have you?”
“Every time, I pushed away the thought of recording it,” says Mats. “I tried to tell it “Your too old” and kept releasing new music instead. But Waiting for a Train simply wouldn’t leave me alone. In the end, I decided to release it just to quiet my mind. I don’t regret it. Now, I’m really thrilled to let my fans hear it.”
Most songwriters record their ideas by humming into their mobile phones. Mats
Dernánd is no exception. But when the idea for Waiting for a Train came to him, that wasn’t an option – it was long before the age of mobile phones.
“I stood there singing the song on the platform, waiting for the train. When the train arrived, I had to take out a notebook and try to write down the melody using musical notation. It’s probably a good thing I did – otherwise, there’s a good chance I would’ve forgotten it.”
Mats is a songwriter, producer, singer, keyboardist, trumpeter, and harmonica player who has been awarded multiple times in leading songwriting competitions.
“Waiting for a Train is the first song where I play all my instruments,” Mats says. “But it’s really my amazing fellow musicians who bring the song to life. The groove they create is something I could never have achieved on my own.”
Waiting for a Train is a cheerful, almost euphoric, pop song. It captures the feeling
of anticipation – a longing for life to take a new and exciting direction. That something new and wonderful might be waiting just around the corner.
“The title ‘Waiting for a Train’ is actually a pretty worn-out cliché,” Mats admits. “But that’s okay. I really did write the song while waiting for a train. And now it finally gets to be released. It deserves that, I think. I’m excited.”
