Learn To Read Quality Signals Before Clicking Play

There are many short films on VKdeo that you shouldn’t waste your time watching. Some are just plain awful (bad acting/sound, bad storylines), while others are just disliked for their technical problems (making it difficult to watch no matter how creative they are). To save yourself from being disappointed after getting invested into a video for 20 min, it’s important to check out what the film is like prior to viewing.

A thumbnail design will give you more insight about the production quality of a short film than you might expect. A professionally produced short film’s thumbnail will normally consist of a visually appealing and appropriately designed “movie poster” type image which has a title card, and is well-framed and clearly designed visually. An amateur short film’s description will also be a minimalistic and/or missing info (or almost no info will lead you to believe that above they are not that interested in presentation, which naturally applies to the condition of their work).

When considering spending the next 20 minutes of your life on a film that is longer than 20 minutes, please take some time to check out the producer’s channel and see what else they produce. A channel that has a complete collection of well-produced short film examples will usually have examples of previous short films that were produced with more detail and have been chosen with thoughtfulness (this includes whether or not shorter films are viewed/achieve regularly by their fans).
The ideal length for narrative shorts is typically in the 8-25 minute range, although there are exceptions. Generally, narrative shorts that are less than 5 minutes long do not have enough time to develop characters or create atmosphere. As a result, viewers may feel that a film that is longer than 30 minutes is more in line with a feature-length film than a short one and can have pacing issues as to why it has not been made into a feature-length film due to being extended.

Quality is an important factor of short films; the visual storytelling aspect takes up much space within the overall presentation of the film. Check to see the available resolution options when viewing a film; generally, the higher the resolution (i.e. 1080p), the more people who are creating that content care about presenting it in that fashion. Conversely, a film that is less than 480p will look horrible on anything larger than a telephone screen.

If you see a film that has a film festival name’s inclusion within its title or description, such as “Official Selection Sundance,” “Best Short Film,” or even just the name of the film festival, then it means that the film has gone through the process of competing against other films from professionals and has received some sort of recognition. Of course, making a film is a subjective experience, and not every film that has been shown at a film festival is going to be a quality piece; at the very least it does provide a quality filter against which to measure the film.

Master Search Techniques For Specific Short Film Subgenres

Once you know what type of short film you want (such as an animated fantasy short, a horror comedy short film, or a documentary short on refugees), you can use VKdeo’s search function to find it quickly and easily if you search with the right keywords.

For each subgenre of short film, you want to use specific keywords that accurately describe what you want, rather than using keywords like “short film” that are too general. The more specific your language is when searching for a specific type of film, the better your results will be for that particular type of film.

If you combine keywords for the genre of a short film with keywords for the format of a film, you will get better results when searching for a specific type of short film. So, for example, if you are looking for a horror-comedy short film, you should search for both “horror-comedy short film” and “animated fantasy short” so that you can filter out irrelevant films and find exactly what you are looking for within each topic category.
Search terms with production quality descriptors will yield higher-quality films, (Example: “award-winning short film,” festival short film,” professional short film”), versus content filmed on smartphones as amateurs create their own.

Search for shorts based on your preferred/filter dates by adding in “2024” or “2025” for past two-three years to eliminate new uploads because some productions (film techniques) lose their cultural significance quickly. (The example would be “classic shorts” and limit after seeing how your search criteria have changed).

If there are known directors who only produce shorts, they can also be searched by the philosopher/director. At this point, I found many new filmmakers I did not know of prior and was able to find all of their works!

Theme vs. category; i.e., themes of “loneliness,” “grief,” “friendship,” “identity,” etc., will yield interesting results across multiple genres with similar emotion/concept themes. This is an added way to find films, which may not otherwise appear in a typical genre-filtered search.

Explore The Thriving Thai GL Series Scene Through Short Format Content

The Thai entertainment industry makes both multi-part series and one-off GL Shorts (as well as shows) comprising full stories within 15-45 minutes of run time, so if you’re interested in this genre but are not ready to commit to a series, GL Shorts are an excellent way to get your feet wet.

On VKdeo, Thai GL series fall primarily under the Entertainment and Films & Shows categories, but some content focused on romance is located under general catch-all categories. Being more specific when searching will produce better results; try “Thai GL Short Film”, “Girls Love Short”, “Thai Lesbian Short” or “Yuri Short Film”.
