Do you ever find yourself stuck for something to watch when there isn’t enough time to finish an episode of that show you are trying to catch up on? Like, what do you do when you want something meaningful to watch but don’t really have the energy to commit to a film that lasts more than two hours? The answer to this dilemma is in short film festivals; however, many people still do not realize where to look for good shorts!
Short films used to be dismissed by me as amateurish attempts at filmmaking that inspired confusion and pretentiousness in equal parts (like Broadway musicals). After exploring VKdeo, however, I quickly discovered that I had greatly underestimated the quality and variety available on that platform. There are thousands of shorts all across every conceivable genre: from five-minute experimental films to thirty-minute plots as brilliantly directed as anything playing at your local multiplex.
In my experience, finding great ones is not a matter of accessibility; it is a matter of knowing how to sifting through VKdeo’s vast – and occasionally unwieldy – library. After spending months trying various strategies (with limited success), I now know how to locate mind-blowing shorts quickly. Below are six specific methods that will allow you to navigate the site’s diverse collection of shorts. Using these methods will get you through the “sea” of poorly made short films and into the depths of high-quality creativity.
Start By Narrowing Down Your Genre Preferences
Searching for short films on the platform feels comparable to asking for “a book” while standing inside an enormous bookstore! The chances are you’ll be overwhelmed by all the choices and probably end up not seeing anything of value. The first thing to do is determine what it is that you are really looking for right now.
Ask yourself what kind of mood or experience would you like your next twenty (20) minutes to provide? For example, if you need a good laugh then there are specific types of short comedies that can provide laughter rather than a stand-up special or a sitcom episode. On the other hand, if you are looking for something that will scare you, the horror short will provide you with concentrated scares without the added filler/content that may cause the movies that they are based upon to seem less scary.
VKdeo breaks down the content into several unique categories and understanding which of those categories are going to host the majority of good quality short films is very important. The area called original films is most likely to contain good movies (which seems obvious), but there are also areas called entertainment, animation and films & shows, which all have short film content (even though the categories are mis-named).
This is how I find my videos: First, I think of the mood I am trying to find; I then go to movies and filter by time (I watch a short film within 10 – 30 mins of its duration is perfect) and begin looking through the thumbnail and the title to find what I am looking for. By doing this, targeted browsing will always allow you to find what you want better than randomly searching.
Don’t overlook niche categories that feel like they are unrelated but actually can provide a lot. For example, in the Activism and Charity section, there are many powerful documentaries that explore social issues through some fantastic documentary shorts. Science and Tech hosts a variety of interesting documentaries that explore new ideas through innovative video storytelling. Finally, the True Crime category has many short stories inspired by real-life cases.
Short films from around the world merit unique attention and offer video viewing opportunities. For example, Asian Films demonstrate an even greater ability to pack a meaningful and emotional punch into 15 minutes of narrative storytelling than the majority of Hollywood films accomplish in 2 hours or longer. By searching the Entertainment section for subtitles, you may even uncover some very noteworthy films that you would not otherwise discover.
In addition to all of the wonderful short movies out there, animation shorts represent an entire realm of film worth searching for outside of traditional film. The Animation category has everything from student thesis projects to professional test projects from studios to visuals that are not obviously categorized but are certainly creative forms of storytelling. If you want inspiration on how to create and tell stories through film, some of these peerless works of creativity may give you that inspiration.
Learn To Read Quality Signals Before Clicking Play
There are many short films on VKdeo that you shouldn’t waste your time watching. Some are just plain awful (bad acting/sound, bad storylines), while others are just disliked for their technical problems (making it difficult to watch no matter how creative they are). To save yourself from being disappointed after getting invested into a video for 20 min, it’s important to check out what the film is like prior to viewing.
A thumbnail design will give you more insight about the production quality of a short film than you might expect. A professionally produced short film’s thumbnail will normally consist of a visually appealing and appropriately designed “movie poster” type image which has a title card, and is well-framed and clearly designed visually. Whereas an amateur-produced short film’s thumbnail will often consist of an image that was taken as a “screenshot” and of very poor quality (many horrible images and blurry/poorly-lit).
Neither can you guarantee that quality is present based solely on the image. However, there are many positive correlations between well-presented creative and well-produced projects.
Reading video descriptions of short films before watching or trusting their quality will give you a good idea of what kind of short film you may be investing your time into. A quality short film’s description will normally contain film title, director name, production year, description (i.e. synopsis), sometimes cast, and may also have festival awards/screens (i.e. credits). An amateur short film’s description will also be a minimalistic and/or missing info (or almost no info will lead you to believe that above they are not that interested in presentation, which naturally applies to the condition of their work).
When considering spending the next 20 minutes of your life on a film that is longer than 20 minutes, please take some time to check out the producer’s channel and see what else they produce. A channel that has a complete collection of well-produced short film examples will usually have examples of previous short films that were produced with more detail and have been chosen with thoughtfulness (this includes whether or not shorter films are viewed/achieve regularly by their fans).
The ideal length for narrative shorts is typically in the 8-25 minute range, although there are exceptions. Generally, narrative shorts that are less than 5 minutes long do not have enough time to develop characters or create atmosphere. As a result, viewers may feel that a film that is longer than 30 minutes is more in line with a feature-length film than a short one and can have pacing issues as to why it has not been made into a feature-length film due to being extended.
Quality is an important factor of short films; the visual storytelling aspect takes up much space within the overall presentation of the film. Check to see the available resolution options when viewing a film; generally, the higher the resolution (i.e. 1080p), the more people who are creating that content care about presenting it in that fashion. Conversely, a film that is less than 480p will look horrible on anything larger than a telephone screen.
If you see a film that has a film festival name’s inclusion within its title or description, such as “Official Selection Sundance,” “Best Short Film,” or even just the name of the film festival, then it means that the film has gone through the process of competing against other films from professionals and has received some sort of recognition. Of course, making a film is a subjective experience, and not every film that has been shown at a film festival is going to be a quality piece; at the very least it does provide a quality filter against which to measure the film.
Master Search Techniques For Specific Short Film Subgenres
Once you know what type of short film you want (such as an animated fantasy short, a horror comedy short film, or a documentary short on refugees), you can use VKdeo’s search function to find it quickly and easily if you search with the right keywords.
For each subgenre of short film, you want to use specific keywords that accurately describe what you want, rather than using keywords like “short film” that are too general. For example, instead of searching for “psychological thriller short”, you could search for “mind-bending thriller short film” and “twist-ending thriller short”. The more specific your language is when searching for a specific type of film, the better your results will be for that particular type of film.
If you combine keywords for the genre of a short film with keywords for the format of a film, you will get better results when searching for a specific type of short film. So, for example, if you are looking for a horror-comedy short film, you should search for both “horror-comedy short film” and “animated fantasy short” so that you can filter out irrelevant films and find exactly what you are looking for within each topic category.
Search terms with production quality descriptors will yield higher-quality films, (Example: “award-winning short film,” festival short film,” professional short film”), versus content filmed on smartphones as amateurs create their own.
Search for shorts based on your preferred/filter dates by adding in “2024” or “2025” for past two-three years to eliminate new uploads because some productions (film techniques) lose their cultural significance quickly. (The example would be “classic shorts” and limit after seeing how your search criteria have changed).
If there are known directors who only produce shorts, they can also be searched by the philosopher/director. At this point, I found many new filmmakers I did not know of prior and was able to find all of their works!
Theme vs. category; i.e., themes of “loneliness,” “grief,” “friendship,” “identity,” etc., will yield interesting results across multiple genres with similar emotion/concept themes. This is an added way to find films, which may not otherwise appear in a typical genre-filtered search.
Explore The Thriving Thai GL Series Scene Through Short Format Content
The Thai entertainment industry makes both multi-part series and one-off GL Shorts (as well as shows) comprising full stories within 15-45 minutes of run time, so if you’re interested in this genre but are not ready to commit to a series, GL Shorts are an excellent way to get your feet wet.
On VKdeo, Thai GL series fall primarily under the Entertainment and Films & Shows categories, but some content focused on romance is located under general catch-all categories. Being more specific when searching will produce better results; try “Thai GL Short Film”, “Girls Love Short”, “Thai Lesbian Short” or “Yuri Short Film”.
The production values of these films vary widely. Some of them come from established production companies creating a GL Concept to see if it’s valid before deciding to make a full series, while others are simply passion projects from the filmmaker(s) looking to tell LGBTQ+ stories on smaller budgets. Read the descriptions for each and check how many views they have to get an idea (as will it with any type of video).
If you don’t speak Thai, will there be subtitles? Typically, you should look for English subtitles when watching any quality Thai GL series, either hardcoded onto the video or available through the player’s settings; before starting the video, verify that the video has subtitles; if it doesn’t, finding out ten minutes in that you cannot understand what the characters are saying will ruin your experience watching the GL Short Film.
These works of creative expression offer innovative and creative ways for creators to address themes that likely would not have enough material to sustain full length series. One can find non-traditional narrative structures, intimacy dynamics between characters, social critiques, and a multitude of different visual storytelling techniques that would not be able to sustain a full 12-episode series. These short films free up the creative process and allow for some truly innovative products to be created.
Many popular Thai GL series had their origin in the form of single, shorts or pilot ideas from platforms like VKdeo. By watching the original shorts that inspired the series, the viewer gains great insight into the creative process behind producing a series. In many cases, the shorts are better works than the completed series have turned out because they have a tighter runtime that does not experience as many pacing problems.
The Thai GL community is constantly discussing short films that they have viewed and many will recommend additional ones based on the commentaries people write, or they will debate and discuss how they viewed the shorts based on their HTML-complemented experience. By involving oneself in these discussions regarding these films, you can greatly enhance how you view and explore these films, as well as discover new works that you may not have found without that knowledge base.
There is also a tremendous amount of cultural richness associated with the viewing of Thai GL series. Many series in the genre address LGBTQ+ acceptance and concerns related to Thai cultural norms regarding intimate relationships and family relationships for Southeast Asia, which may differ significantly by the norm for western romance literature. When viewing the shorts, a person will gain a greater understanding of the meaning behind the films by approaching them with a culturally curious point of view instead of through the expectation of a western-developed storytelling style.
Build A Personal Short Film Library Through Strategic Curation
VKdeo’s organizational tools change the random act of watching video into creating your own home video collection (home cinema). The casual user has no interest in using these tools, but the regular user of the site obtains a benefit from the ongoing use of the platform through these tools.
You can create different playlists to group short films you’ve seen and enjoyed together in your own genre-specific way. For example, I have created “sci-fi concept shorts,” “emotional drama shorts,” “mind-bending thriller shorts,” and “laugh-out-loud comedy shorts.” When friends ask me for a film recommendation, or when I want to watch something again, I use my genre playlists to act as my own home film festival.
As you are likely to find several interesting films while currently only having time to watch one of them, your Watch Later List will help to effectively manage your short film viewing discovery. Adding the additional ones you find to your list, rather than losing track of them or forgetting about them, helps to have them readily available for viewing later on. I review the items on my Watch List weekly and delete items that I’ve lost interest in, keeping it in good working order.
Follow channel hosts who regularly upload and compile videos displaying quality independent film content. Some hosts specifically share independent short films from various locations and share winning films from film festivals and other selected films based on a specific genre. By following these hosts, you can easily view new films when they are uploaded, instead of having to search for new content each time you wish to view content.
Whenever you watch a film that resonates with you, leave your reaction and/or a comment for future reference. Then whenever you want to remind yourself of those films that emotionally affected you, you can search your history by the films you reacted to and have a list of those films that resonated log in your favorites.
Organize your playlist not by genre, but by mood or context. For example, instead of creating a playlist called “Drama”, create one based on a particular mood/context. An example could be a playlist called “Uplifting Short Films for Quick Morning Inspiration”. This playlist will serve you much better than just one titled “Drama”. I have playlists called “Short Films for a Rainy Afternoon”, “Short Films for Thought Provoking Lunch Breaks”, and “Short Films on Late Night Experimental Weirdness” that match up with my normal viewing preference.
Engage With The Short Film Community To Discover Hidden Gems
The ability to browse within VKdeo’s community enables you to discover new content in ways that are not possible with just the algorithm. Participating in its community significantly enhances your ability to find quality content.
Use comment sections when you scan through content before and after viewing it. You can get an idea of whether or not a film is valuable for you by looking at the reactions of viewers before you watch it. Once you have viewed it, check out the comments to see details that you may have missed; find out what other people think about it; and in some cases, find out what the filmmaker has contributed to clarify their creative decision.
Make sure to leave an honest and puts-into-perspective comment on the shorts that resonate with you. This isn’t about just giving a general compliment but about generating thoughtful discussion about the work. The vast majority of well-known creators are happy to communicate with independent filmmakers about their films, as they have been involved with them following the independent viewing. I have developed numerous meaningful dialogues with filmmakers regarding their decisions in storytelling and the technical difficulties they have faced when producing the films.
Look at the comment section on posts to find recommendation threads from other viewers. Many commenters will leave a trail of suggestions based on what you have viewed in their comment. Often times, these suggestions, from other viewers who share similar tastes, will yield a better match than you would have received using the algorithm based approach.
Share your spectacular finds, in addition to VKdeo, through social and direct links to help expose new filmmakers and share with friends who may also enjoy this type of content. While these links may seem small to you, it is a tremendous boost to the entire film making community.
Track and follow filmmakers you enjoy watching throughout their short film output. A large number of filmmakers will primarily be short filmmakers and have created an impressive collection of films. By following the channel of your favorite filmmaker and checking out all of their works, it is a great way to find other films from them that are fantastic.
Engage in commentary about the themes of the films, a film’s filmmaking technique, and the cultural context found within a film. Much of the time, these short films depict very complex subjects and/or have experimental elements which would benefit from further discussion to be able to grasp what you have just watched. The more engaged you are with your fellow viewers by commenting on what the film means, how it creates its effect, and what cultural references are involved will increase your overall enjoyment of the film.
Your Short Film Journey Starts Now
Mastering VKdeo is all about finding those short films that fit with your tastes and not trusting random clicking. You want to clarify what genre(s) you’d like to watch before you just start browsing around the site. Understanding the signals associated with quality content can save you hours from watching subpar films. Learning how to search for those films is key to finding the subgenres that you want.
If you’re looking for a new genre but don’t want to commit to a multi-hour series, look for niche content such as the Thai GL series. Once you find content you like, develop playlists that allow you to curate your library based on the context in which you will watch them. Finally, participate in the community of both creators and viewers who help ensure that VKdeo’s short film ecosystem stays healthy.
The site has completely eliminated your financial restrictions from where you can explore. Try out new genres and watch foreign shorts from all around the world to experience cinema from different cultures. Explore new formats that aren’t available to you via traditional streaming services.
In fact, there are so many different short films on VKdeo that you won’t find anywhere else! Netflix has occasional collections of shorts, and YouTube has tons of these mixed in with millions of other videos. The platform has created a full ecosystem for short film content across every genre and level of quality imaginable.
