Off the wall anti-MAGA musical comedy was cancelled twice by Amazon.
Featuring a renowned Trump impressionist, a standout cast, and nearly a dozen songs falling somewhere between Tom Lehrer and “Weird Al” Yankovic, when Dictator for a Day premiered off-Broadway in October 2024, veteran reviewer Peter Filichia wrote, “I’ve seen all the great mimics who have done marvelous impersonations . . . but I have never, ever, ever seen one as accomplished as J-L Cauvin. It’s a performance that demands to be seen.”
Yet thanks to the big media chill known as Trump 2.0, the screen version of DFAD was shelved for over a year, during which time dozens of distributors considered the 83-minute film too outrageous, and Amazon greenlighted, then cancelled the film twice. Said DFAD Executive Producer Rich Herschlag, “Our film is even funnier than Melania, at about one-one-thousandth the cost.”
Finally, this month, Dictator for a Day has seen sunrise on YouTube, Apple TV, and Google TV, with release on both Tubi and Xumo coming later in the spring. “These events may represent a thaw of sorts,” said DFAD Director/Producer Thomas Ryan Ward. “And I guarantee we won’t bomb as badly as Trump’s war on Iran.”
Dictator for a Day co-stars veteran comics Rory Scholl (musical Trump) and Sammy “the Deuce” Kassin as a particularly disheveled and distraught Senator Bernie Sanders. Notable songs include “Trump in a Jumpsuit,” “Trump Babies,” and “Everybody Get Your Trump Cards.” Several clips from the show, including J-L Cauvin’s Trump giving a commencement speech at now defunct Trump University, have already gone viral. Said Cauvin, “The show is very strong, like Trump, and will succeed bigly because I’m in it.”
