The Album You Can’t Hear Anymore Still Tells You Everything About Michael K
Long before professionally mixed records, established collaborations, or carefully planned releases, Michael K recorded a project called 40 Barz. It wasn’t created during the easiest chapter of his life. It was born during one of the hardest. The project, named after an overdose he survived, no longer represents the artist Michael Constantine Kritikos is today, and it isn’t part of the catalog he points new listeners toward. But its existence explains something important about the way he has always approached music. Even then, songs weren’t simply entertainment—they were documentation. They became a way to process experiences that were often too difficult to explain in conversation. Looking back, Kritikos doesn’t speak about those records as polished achievements. He sees them as snapshots of a young artist trying to understand his own life while still learning how to write about it. The music has changed dramatically since then. The reason he creates it hasn’t.
That honesty continues to define Michael K’s work today. His records don’t pretend every chapter has a perfect ending, nor do they rely on hardship to tell the story for him. Instead, they reflect growth. A graduate of The Los Angeles Film School with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Production, Kritikos has transformed years of experience into a disciplined creative process built around songwriting, vocal production, and atmosphere. Recording through a Neumann U87 microphone, Neve 1073 preamp, and Universal Audio Apollo Twin X interface before collaborating with longtime recording and mix engineer Orlando, he approaches every session with one question: Does this record tell the truth? If it doesn’t, it isn’t finished. That philosophy has remained remarkably consistent from his earliest recordings to the music he’s creating today. The songs may sound different now, but the purpose behind them remains the same—to leave listeners with something real, even after the last note fades.
