They Dead Return With Lucy’s Gone, a Post-Punk Record Forged in a City Under Pressure
After more than a decade away, the Minneapolis trio channels the fury and solidarity of early 2026 into their leanest, loudest album yet, out October 20.
Some reunions are about nostalgia. They Dead’s is about now.
The Minneapolis post-punk trio, made up of singer and guitarist Bryan Knisley, drummer Ian Prince, and bassist Kate Clements, will release their sophomore album Lucy’s Gone on October 20, 2026. It arrives thirteen years after their 2013 debut Lizards All, and it sounds like a band with something urgent to say. Written as federal agents moved into the Twin Cities under Operation Metro Surge, the album is what the band calls a post-punk manifesto: tight, abrasive, and aimed squarely at the moment it was born in.
An Unplanned Comeback
They Dead was never supposed to come back. The band’s roots stretch to the early 2000s, when Knisley and Clements played together in Moon Maan. The pair met Prince while sharing a bill with Kid Dakota, and in 2012 Knisley and Prince launched They Dead as a four-piece live act, with Clements contributing in the studio. After Lizards All came out in 2013, the group dissolved the following year.
The members stayed busy in the years that followed. Knisley worked across genres, including alt-country with Meat Raffle Road. Prince built a career as a studio and touring drummer with Soul Asylum, Cloud Cult, and Houston. Clements went back to graduate school.
Then, in late 2025, Knisley was asked to open for Math Emergency, the band fronted by John Moe, at their farewell show. He called Prince and Clements, and for the first time ever, the three took the stage together as a trio. The night went well enough that they decided to keep going, treating the band as a creative outlet to get through a long Minnesota winter.
Writing Through the Surge
That winter turned out to be anything but quiet. In the early months of 2026, Operation Metro Surge brought federal forces into the Twin Cities, and Minneapolis responded with organized, peaceful resistance. The band describes the operation in blunt terms, calling it a fascist occupation, and says the songs they were writing began to change shape as events unfolded right outside their doors.
According to the band, the music that emerged is driven by two forces at once: fury and love. It’s the same combination they saw in the neighbors and community members who stood up against the operation, and it runs through every track on Lucy’s Gone.
Leaner, Harder, Still Hooky
Compared to Lizards All, the new record strips things down. The trio format leaves less room to hide, and the ten songs lean into a rawer, more abrasive edge. But They Dead haven’t abandoned the melodic, angular hooks that defined their earlier work; they’ve sharpened them. Fans of Young Widows, IDLES, the Black Angels, and Queens of the Stone Age will find plenty to hold onto.
Lucy’s Gone is also a Twin Cities record through and through. It was tracked at The Hideaway Studios in Minneapolis with engineer Joe Mabbott, mixed by Jake Hanner, and mastered by local mainstay Dave Gardner.

Release Show and Upcoming Dates
They Dead will celebrate the album’s release on Thursday, October 22, at Zhora Darling in Minneapolis, with support from Institutional Green and Unstable Shapes. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., music starts at 7. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 on the day of the show.
The band returns to the stage on November 27 at Amsterdam in St. Paul, alongside Danser and Exactly No.
