For years, Chris Arthur remained just outside the spotlight, working behind the scenes while quietly questioning whether he had the confidence to step forward as an artist. That changed after the collapse of a relationship pushed him into a period of heartbreak, self-reflection and survival. In the aftermath, Arthur discovered that songwriting had always been his instinctive way of processing difficult emotions. The songs began arriving quickly, and although he initially had no plans to release them, he started sharing voice memo recordings with a few close friends.

One of those friends immediately recognized something special in the material, helping encourage Arthur to take the next step. The result is Underneath The Scar, his debut album. Produced, recorded and mixed by Eric Sanderson, co-founder and multi-instrumentalist of acclaimed New York band Augustines, the album traces Arthur’s journey through heartbreak, grief, healing and the gradual return of his creative confidence.

Sanderson’s role in the project was rooted in a friendship that stretches back more than 25 years. Arthur previously worked as Tour Manager for Sanderson’s former band Pela before continuing to work alongside Augustines during much of the group’s rise between 2011 and 2016. Arthur also appeared in Todd Howe’s award-winning documentary Rise: The Story of Augustines. Their longstanding relationship created a sense of trust that allowed Arthur to approach the album without hiding behind his doubts.

“The songs started pouring out like I was bailing water out of me so I wouldn’t drown,” Arthur recalls. Rather than reshaping the material into a more conventional sequence, he decided to keep the songs in the order they were written. The resulting album unfolds as an emotional timeline, beginning with the first single, “All That Glitters Isn’t Gold,” and moving through the collapse of a relationship, grief, reflection, resilience and, ultimately, hope.

Originally from Buffalo, New York, and now based in Southern California, Arthur approaches Underneath The Scar as both a personal record and an invitation for listeners to find themselves within his experiences. Built around acoustic-driven songwriting and organic performances, the ten-track album prioritizes emotional honesty over polish. At a time when music consumption is increasingly shaped by playlists and short-form content, Arthur’s debut makes a case for the album as a complete story, offering a deeply personal account of healing while leaving room for listeners to recognize their own scars.
