Grave Corps Opens Another Door with“Pretty Insane”

Horror is most effective when it denies the audience a clear explanation. The blood may be real, the monster may not be, and the person at the center of it all is usually the least reliable witness in the room.

Grave Corps builds its new single and video, “Pretty Insane,” around that uncertainty. The scene places vocalist Traci Von Krypt inside Hellfire Asylum, where a failed experiment has left her slipping between reality, hallucination, and revenge. By the end, it is unclear whether she has settled the score with her tormentors or simply disappeared further inside her own mind.

That ambiguity gives the video more to work with than the usual collection of restraints, medical instruments, and bloodstained walls. Directed by Roman Gamble and produced by Thrash Panda Media, it carries the grime and physicality of old grindhouse horror, with Traci throwing herself so far into the performance that the shoot left her bruised.

More importantly, the asylum is not merely set decoration. Beneath the violence and unraveling psychology, “Pretty Insane” takes aim at the narrow roles imposed on women: the demand to be attractive but controlled, powerful but agreeable, feminine without ever becoming threatening. Grave Corps reminds us the pretty and aggressive can occupy the same body, and anyone made uncomfortable by that can find the exit.

   

Recorded at Catamount Recording with longtime collaborator Travis Huisman producing and engineering, the track keeps the band’s punk-and-metal foundation intact while making greater use of atmosphere. 

Grave Corps has spent nearly two decades treating horror as a complete world rather than seasonal decoration. “Pretty Insane” opens another locked room inside that space, and wisely leaves the final diagnosis unresolved.
