I’ve been coming back to Koh Phangan since 2003.

Back then, it felt like a secret. Dirt roads, hidden beaches, and sunsets with strangers who somehow became friends before the night was over.

Over the past twenty years, I’ve watched the island evolve. New cafés have opened, boutique hotels have appeared, and visitors now arrive from every corner of the world.

Yet one thing has never changed.

The people.

Many people know Koh Phangan because of the Full Moon Party.

For me, that’s never been the reason to return.

It’s the conversations over coffee in Thong Sala. The musicians inviting one another onto the stage. The entrepreneurs exchanging ideas. The photographers capturing everyday moments. The painters transforming blank canvases into stories. The feeling that complete strangers can become lifelong friends after just one evening.

One of the things I’ve come to appreciate most over the years is just how many incredibly talented artists call this island home.

I’ve met painters from Thailand, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Australia, the UK and many other countries. Some create full-time, while others paint simply because they love it. Every one of them adds something unique to the creative spirit that makes Koh Phangan so special.

Recently, while walking through Thong Sala, I came across a small workshop with a simple wooden sign that read:

Frame Making – Original Art.

At first glance it looked modest.

But stepping inside felt like entering a gallery.

Original artwork covered the walls, surrounded by beautifully handcrafted frames. It immediately became clear that this wasn’t just another shop—it was a place dedicated to helping artists preserve and present their work.

The workshop is known locally as Phangan Art Club / Frame Shop.

More than simply a picture framing business, it’s a creative workshop offering professional custom framing, original paintings, prints, handmade artwork and custom screen-printing. Over the years it has quietly become an important part of Thong Sala’s creative community, helping local artists, photographers, cafés, hotels, collectors and visitors display and protect the artwork that gives the island its character.

From everything I could find, Phangan Art Club / Frame Shop appears to be Koh Phangan’s only dedicated custom picture framing workshop.

That alone makes it something worth celebrating.

Visitors often admire the finished painting.

But they rarely think about the craftsmanship that protects it.

A great frame doesn’t steal attention from the artwork.

It completes it.

Every frame is carefully handcrafted to complement the artwork it surrounds, preserving not only the piece itself but also the story behind it.

Before leaving, I had the chance to speak with the owner, Pu, whose words perfectly captured the philosophy behind the workshop.

“Every painting tells a story,” says Pu. “Our job is to make sure that story is protected for generations.”

Pu also shared what inspired him to open the workshop.

“I opened this shop because Koh Phangan is my home. I graduated with a degree in Fine Arts, and I wanted to bring my knowledge and passion back to the island by supporting local artists and helping preserve their work.” — Pu

Those words reveal that this is much more than a business.

It’s the vision of someone who grew up on Koh Phangan, studied Fine Arts, and chose to invest his skills back into the community that shaped him.

More Than a Shop

What impressed me most wasn’t simply the artwork on the walls—it was what the shop represents.

Koh Phangan is home to an incredible creative community. Over the years I’ve met painters, illustrators, photographers and artists from all over the world who have chosen this island as their home or creative sanctuary.

Yet every artist needs more than inspiration.

They need places that support their work.

This workshop quietly does exactly that.

It helps preserve the paintings, photographs and artwork that tell the story of Koh Phangan itself.

That makes it far more than just another business.

It plays a unique role in the island’s creative community by helping artists present their work professionally while preserving it for collectors, businesses, cafés, hotels and visitors alike.

I’ve travelled to many countries since first discovering Koh Phangan more than twenty years ago, but I’ve rarely found another place where collaboration happens so naturally.

Ideas become projects.

Projects become businesses.

Businesses become communities.

Communities become lifelong friendships.

That’s the real magic of this island.

Walking through Thong Sala today, you quickly discover that creativity exists on almost every street.

Independent galleries.

Local designers.

Woodworkers.

Ceramic artists.

Photographers.

Jewellery makers.

Musicians rehearsing for tonight’s performance.

Painters finishing their latest canvas.

Every creator adds another brushstroke to Koh Phangan’s identity.

This article is therefore more than a feature about one business.

It’s a shout-out to every local painter, illustrator, photographer, sculptor, designer, musician and creative soul who continues to make Koh Phangan one of Southeast Asia’s most inspiring creative communities.

Supporting the Soul of Koh Phangan

This article isn’t an advertisement.

It’s a thank you.

A thank you to the painters whose work brings colour to our walls.

To the photographers who capture the island’s breathtaking beauty.

To the musicians who bring people together night after night.

To the tattoo artists, ceramic makers, woodworkers, designers, sculptors, craftspeople and every creative soul who has chosen to call Koh Phangan home.

And it’s a thank you to people like Pu, whose workshop quietly supports those artists every single day.

When we travel, it’s easy to buy mass-produced souvenirs that could have come from anywhere in the world.

But if we truly want to support a destination, we should support the people who give it its identity.

Buy a painting from a local artist.

Commission a piece that tells your own story.

Step into an independent gallery.

Talk to the artist behind the canvas.

Support the cafés, restaurants and hotels that proudly display local artwork.

Visit the workshops that help preserve creativity for future generations.

Because every purchase is more than a transaction.

It’s encouragement.

It’s recognition.

It’s an investment in the people who make a place worth returning to.

I’ve been coming back to Koh Phangan for more than twenty years.

The beaches are beautiful.

The sunsets are unforgettable.

But the reason I keep returning has always been the people.

Their creativity.

Their kindness.

Their willingness to collaborate.

Their passion for making this island unlike anywhere else in the world.

This column is my small way of saying thank you.

Thank you for making Koh Phangan more colourful.

More inspiring.

More authentic.

Let’s continue supporting the artists, makers and independent businesses that keep this island creative—not only for today’s visitors, but for future generations who will come here searching for the same magic that so many of us have found.

Because in the end…

A destination isn’t remembered only for its scenery.

It’s remembered for the people who give it a soul.
